A 39-year-old Brownsville police officer was arrested for allegedly driving while intoxicated with his daughter inside the truck.
Police said David Alonzo Treviño II fell asleep inside the Toyota Tundra truck he was driving while he was stopped at a traffic light. Police found the vehicle at the intersection of Stagecoach and Alton Gloor Boulevard early Thursday morning.
Investigator Martin Sandoval, a spokesman for the Brownsville Police Department, said police went to the location at about 12:40 a.m. Thursday after a citizen called police to tell them a Toyota Tundra was stopped at the light and the driver was asleep at the wheel with the vehicle still on.
The call came in as a “subject down” and when such calls come in, the Brownsville Fire Department also responds, Sandoval said.
By the time the officers arrived, firefighters had already managed to open the truck door and Treviño was standing outside the vehicle, Sandoval said.
Sandoval said the officers smelled alcohol emitting from Treviño, and although he consented to performing the Standardized Field Sobriety Test, he was not able to perform them.
Treviño was transported to the city jail and arraigned on one count of driving while intoxicated with a child under 15.
He received a $4,000 personal recognizance bond and resigned shortly after.
He had been employed with the Brownsville Police Department for 10 years.
“At the Brownsville Police Department, we hold everybody accountable for their actions and no one is going to violate the public’s trust and we serve the citizens of the city of Brownsville,” Sandoval said.
