Hidalgo County sheriff’s deputies are asking for the public’s help in finding the burglars who stole a 900-pound safe with at least half-a-million dollars inside.

Deputies were called to the 800 block of Victoria Road in rural Donna shortly after 9:15 p.m. Monday, April 25, in reference to a burglary. The homeowner told investigators he found the door to his home had been kicked open when he arrived.

Deputies saw a trail of red marks that went from a room in the far southeast of the home all the way to the front door, according to a social media post from the sheriff’s office.

This red Jeep, possibly a 2007-2010 model with no front license plates with stock rims, is one of two vehicles captured in surveillance footage at the scene of a stolen safe containing $500,00 in rural Donna on Monday, April 25, 2022. (Courtesy Photo)

The owner told deputies there was more than $500,000 and a handgun inside the safe.

Investigators reviewed surveillance video from across the street which showed two vehicles entering the property and removing the safe from inside the home.

They believe a red Jeep, possibly a 2007-2010 model, was involved, as well as a gray Ford pickup truck, possibly a newer model. Neither of the vehicles had front license plates. They did, however, have stock rims, and the truck had a bumper sticker on both sides of the rear bumper. Both vehicles were last seen heading north on Victoria Road.
