Man booked for public intoxication found dead in La Joya jail

A 60-year-old La Joya resident booked into the city’s jail Sunday night on a public intoxication charge died early Monday morning, the department said on Facebook.

That statement, which doesn’t identify the man, said he was booked Sunday at approximately 10:22 p.m.

At around 1:13 a.m. Monday morning, authorities said he was found unresponsive and that police, fire and EMS provided immediate medical attention.

The man was transported to Mission Regional Medical Center where he died.

The jail death has been referred to the Texas Rangers, who will conduct the investigation.

The city of La Joya and its police department said they express their condolences to the family.
