Brownsville Mayor Trey Mendez will deliver his 2022 “State of the City: Crossroads Edition” address live on April 21 at the Brownsville Event Center.

Last year’s state-of-the-city address was done virtually last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “Crossroads Edition” is a nod to the fact that this year’s address was supposed to coincide with the 2022 Crossroads Festival, which was canceled because of the pandemic.

“The thought is to possibly have some live music there (on April 21), and since we couldn’t have Crossroads this past year again we wanted to kind of just keep it in the top of people’s heads. … We just want to keep the theme going anyway,” Mendez said.

Brownsville’s first and only Brownsville Crossroads Festival so far was held in February 2020, and plans are to definitely bring it back for 2023, he said.

For this year’s state-of-the-city address, the mayor said he plans to touch on “all the highlights over the past year” including “some really big initiatives,” Mendez said.

“State-of-the-city is always really to talk about the great things we’ve accomplished over the past year, talk about some project that we’ve completed, give an update on the economic status of the city, go through some highlights on sales taxes and other revenues, give people an overall picture of the fiscal health of the city,” he said.

Mendez said he’ll also tease some future projects planned for next year.

“It’s going to be exciting and I always look forward to it,” he said.

The city is hosting the event with the Brownsville Chamber of Commerce, whose president and CEO, Esmeralda “Esmy” Villarreal, said she’s expecting a good turnout for the 300-seat event.

“Our goal is to have a sold-out event and we’re a little over half way,” she said. “Everyone’s excited.”

Registration begins at 11 a.m. and the program starts at 11:30 a.m. Attendees can also register in advance on the chamber’s website. Single tickets are $50, with several levels of sponsorship opportunity also available. The mayor’s address will also be streamed live on the city’s YouTube channel, youtube.com/user/cityofbrownsvilletx.
