A San Juan man accused of seeking sex with children on two occasions and of sharing child pornography will be held without bond pending the resolution of his case.
U.S. Magistrate Judge Nadia S. Medrano issued the order Monday following a Friday detention hearing for 19-year-old Jorge Eduardo Naranjo, who was charged with attempted coercion and enticement of a child.
The FBI arrested Naranjo at an Edinburg hotel March 28 when he showed up believing a person he shared child pornography with was going to let him have sex with their 6-year-old child.
Instead, the FBI arrested him.
The FBI said in a criminal complaint that Naranjo confessed that he previously sought another child to have sex with and said if he ever had a daughter, he would likely sexually abuse her.
Medrano’s detention order notes that Naranjo is a lifelong San Juan resident and that his mother was supportive and expressed willingness to help him.
“However, the allegations in the complaint were very serious and caused great concern for the community,” the complaint notes. “The allegations directly involved the attempted sexual abuse of a child.”
The order also notes that Naranjo had been employed at a “baby store” for more than a year and that he has expressed a current suicidal ideation.
“Because of this conduct, coupled with the type of offense alleged, the Court finds that there are no conditions or a combination of conditions that would reasonably assure the appearance at future court proceedings as well as the safety of the community,” Medrano wrote.
