Hidalgo County officials reported Thursday that 108 more people tested positive for COVID-19 in addition to one death related to the virus.
A Pharr woman in her 70s died due to the virus, slightly increasing the county’s death toll to 2,911.
Of the 108 cases reported by the Hidalgo County Health and Human Services Department Thursday, 47 were confirmed, 59 probable and two suspected.
The majority of cases reported Thursday were led by youth younger than 19, with a total of 36 cases. Young adults in their 20s were the next-highest group reported Thursday, with a total of 28 cases. Adults in their 30s trailed behind with 23 cases.
The total number of cases reported in Hidalgo County is 93,530. Of that total, 60,971 were confirmed, 30,341 probable and 2,218 suspected.
According to a release from the county, a total of 527 cases are active.
Officials also reported 50 people were hospitalized in county hospitals, with 21 patients in intensive care units.
Additionally, the county reported 80 individuals were released from isolation Thursday, increasing that total to 90,092.
As of Thursday, a total of 535,953 COVID-19 tests had been administered in Hidalgo County, with 441,607 results returning negative.
In Cameron County, officials reported a total of 60 positive COVID-19 cases Thursday and two deaths related to the virus, according to a county news release.
The deaths reported Thursday were a Brownsville man in their 60s and a Harlingen woman in their 70s, slightly increasing the county’s death toll to 1,689.
Of the 60 cases reported Thursday, Cameron County officials noted 20 were from facilities housing unaccompanied minors, such as shelters and detention centers.
Youth in between the ages of 10 and 19 led the majority of cases reported from the facilities Thursday, with a total of 14 cases. The remaining six cases included a child younger than nine, three young adults in their 20s and two adults in their 30s.
The remaining 40 cases in Cameron County outside the facilities were also led by youth in between the ages of 10 and 19, with a total of 12 cases. Adults in their 40s were the next age group, with seven cases.
As of Thursday, the total number of COVID-19 cases in Cameron County is 42,341.
Additionally, the county also reported 44 individuals recovered from the virus on Thursday, increasing that total to 39,827.
As for Cameron County’s vaccination efforts, officials said 64.40 percent of their 12 and older population are fully vaccinated, with 75.60 percent receiving at least one dose.
The county also reported that 80.57 percent of their 65 and older population are fully vaccinated, with 88.60 percent receiving at least one dose.
