A U.S. citizen who attempted to smuggle thousands of rounds of ammunition into Mexico was sentenced Monday, records show.
A federal judge sentenced Javier Campos, 24, to a more-than-two-year prison sentence for his role in an attempt to smuggle 6,000 rounds of ammunition into Mexico without declaring the items, according to a criminal complaint filed against Campos.
Campos was arrested during an attempt to enter into Mexico on Feb. 19, 2020.
During an outbound inspection by a Customs and Border Protection officer, it was discovered that Campos had hidden a plastic bag behind one of the seats in the vehicle — the bag contained nearly 6,000 rounds of ammunition.
Subsequently, Campos, who waived his rights, admitted to purchasing the ammunition earlier in the day.
“Campos stated he purchased several boxes of ammunition earlier in the day. Campos further stated that he had purchased the ammunition knowing that the ammunition was intended to be smuggled to Mexico from the United States,” the document stated.
During this same interview, Campos admitted to smuggling ammunition into Mexico in the past.
In October, Campos pleaded guilty to the smuggling goods charge, avoiding a trial before a jury.
In addition to the 51-month prison sentence, Campos will be required to serve three years of supervised release, records show.
