One Walmart store in the Rio Grande Valley has been selected to give out COVID-19 injections as part of the company’s nationwide vaccination program
The Walmart in Brownsville located at 2205 Ruben Torres Blvd, also known as FM 802, will begin offering the vaccines on Friday, Feb. 12. It is among the more than 1,000 locations in Texas and 21 other states giving the inoculations.
Eligible customers in Phase 1A and Phase 1B can schedule an appointment on the Walmart and Sam’s Club websites once appointments are available.
The company says it worked with the Center for Disease Control and the states to identify which store locations would participate in the program.
“Ninety percent of the country lives within ten miles of a Walmart. We’re committed to helping people live better – and healthier lives – in Texas, and we take that role very seriously,” said Dr. Cheryl Pegus, Executive Vice President, Health & Wellness. “We want to help the country re-open, but we can only achieve that through widespread COVID-19 vaccination. We’re proud to work together with the federal government, states, communities, customers and associates to expand access to the vaccine and reach that goal.”
The Brownsville store is the only one taking part south of Kingsville.
Customers who are eligible for the vaccines include the following:
Phase 1A: Front-line healthcare workers and residents at long-term care facilities
Phase 1B: People 65+ or people 16+ with a health condition that increases risk of severe COVID‑19 illness, including but not limited to:

- COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease)
- Down Syndrome
- Heart conditions, such as heart failure, coronary artery disease, or cardiomyopathies
