City of McAllen hosting COVID vaccination clinic Friday

Pre-registration for a Friday vaccination clinic in McAllen will begin online and in-person today at 10 a.m.

There will be 900 doses of the Moderna vaccine administered, with half reserved for those 65 years and older.

Pre-registration begins today, Thursday, Feb. 4, at 10:00 a.m. People can either register via drive-thru at the McAllen Performing Arts Center Parking Lot or online at https://hipaa.jotform.com/210333915188152. Entrance for onsite registration is on Ithaca and 29th Street.

Face masks are required during the on-site registration process. Attendees will be prescreened and have their temperatures taken. Those who are symptomatic for COVID-19 are not eligible to receive the vaccine.

The clinic Friday will be held at the McAllen Convention Center, 700 Convention Center Boulevard, starting at 8:00 a.m. for all pre-registered individuals who are 65 years and older and those who fall in Tier 1A and Tier 1B vaccine eligibility.

Healthcare workers will be asked to provide proof they are in the healthcare industry.

In addition, people aged 18 and older with certain medical conditions are eligible to be vaccinated with the advice of their doctors.

Those between the ages of 18 and 65 must have at least one chronic medical condition which puts them at increased risk for severe illness from the virus that causes COVID-19, such as, but not limited to:

  • cancer
  • chronic kidney disease
  • COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease)
  • heart conditions, such as heart failure, coronary artery disease or cardiomyopathies
  • solid organ transplantation
  • obesity and severe obesity (body mass index of 30 kg/m2 or higher)
  • pregnancy
  • sickle cell disease
  • Type 2 diabetes mellitus

Residents must take a photo ID and are recommended to take proof of medical conditions, like a prescription for a current medication, if they are between the ages of 18 and 65.

Pregnant or lactating women, or anyone who has cancer or is undergoing any immunosuppressive treatment or medication, must bring a US doctor’s notice allowing them to receive the vaccine.

Snacks and water are encouraged to help during the long waiting periods. Children are not allowed in the clinic.

Those who have mobility problems are allowed to take one person inside the clinic to assist them.

“The City of McAllen will continue to host COVID-19 vaccine clinics for our residents as vaccines become available,” said McAllen Mayor Jim Darling.  “We continue to ask for everyone’s patience as the demand for the receiving the vaccine is still greater than the availability of vaccines.  We ask for everyone’s patience as we wait for more and more vaccines to become available.  Additionally, the City of McAllen is following CDC and State of Texas guidelines for who should receive priority in receiving the vaccine, so please, help abuelita and abuelito get registered first, then anyone else who falls into the other tiers.  Our collective goal, from everyone involved in this Friday’s clinic is to able to vaccinate all individuals in our community and county.  In the meantime, please continue to practice all COVID-19 safety protocols, especially wearing a mask, for the protection of others and yourselves.”

Vaccines will be administered by McAllen I.S.D. school nurses, Hidalgo County Health and Human Services Department nurses and McAllen firefighters.
