Brownsville chamber head tapped; Villarreal to sit on state board

Brownsville Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Esmeralda “Esmy” Villarreal has been elected to the 20-member board of directors of the Texas Chamber of Commerce Executives, the statewide professional society of chamber executives, professional staff and affiliated members.

Villarreal served in various community leadership positions before taking the top job at the Brownsville chamber in 2015, and now serves on the boards of the Brownsville Society for the Performing Arts and the Mitte Cultural District in addition to leading the chamber.

“I have always admired the work of the TCCE and have leaned on the guidance and support of the professional staff leading the organization,” she said. “I’m honored and excited to represent the city of Brownsville and the Brownsville Chamber of Commerce membership at the state level by joining colleagues like Steve Ahlenius … of the McAllen chamber, who will serve as the (TCCE) 2021 chairman of the board, and the other board members.”

TCCE 2020 Chairman Cindy DeWease, president and CEO of the Clear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce, described Villarreal as a “hardworking individual whose passion and dedication to serving her community is evident.”

“Her desire to excel in the profession and have a great chamber is apparent, which is why we think she is a great fit to help the organization,” DeWease said.

TCCE Executive Director Aaron Cox predicted that Villarreal will have “an important and positive impact on TCCE and its membership.”

Established in 1906, TCCE bills itself as the longest standing association for chamber of commerce professionals in the nation.
