THE SHOW MUST GO ON: Repertory Theater to host live performance

The Brownsville Repertory Theater in partnership with Saint Joseph Academy will host live performances for “Let Nothing You Dismay” from Dec. 18 to the 20 at the Garza Student Center.

“We are the first group in Texas to do this show,” Chris Ikner, artistic director, said.

” It’s a really great comedy for the holidays, which I think it’s just what we all need right now. It’s a really really good story and it’s eight actors playing 22 characters, so it’s a lot of fun.”

The play, written by Topher Payne who has written a few movies for Hallmark, deals with a couple who live in Alabama and travel to Ohio to adopt a baby who will be born on Christmas Day. Ikner said the show is suitable for the whole family.

” It’s all about family and being together for the holidays. The playwright had actually a really cool talk with us and the whole deal it’s about family and how families are not perfect, and we’ve been without our families before but when we’re together life is so much better with them,” Ikner said.

“I think now with everyone spending a lot of time with their family because of COVID, it really just reminds us to appreciate what we have and to be together is really important. It’s perfect for the Holidays.”

Ikner said it is important for the community to support these type of projects where organizations come together to support the arts.

” I think it’s important to have this kind of partnership, Saint Joe has been wonderfull with all of the safety protocols with COVID-19,” he said. “It’s a great community project and I think it’s important that organizations come together during this time.”

Those participating in the play are all professional actors. Ikner said now more than ever artists are creating and hosting life performances, following safety protocols, is much needed.

” We need it. Artists are creating, they are creating more than ever and theater is not going away, music is not going away, dance is not away and art is not going away,” he said.

“As a matter of fact, I think that after all of this is all set and done and we are in a completely new normal, artists are going to be stronger and more appreciative than ever. This has given us a time to really think about what’s important, as we all are doing right now, and we will have a lot to say. Don’t give up on the artists, anywhere you are.”

Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students. There are also available live-stream performances.

“The actors that we have in this show are phenomenal,” Ikner said. “It’s definitely like nothing anyone has ever seen here before. It’s a really really cool production, it’s fast-paced, it’s a great comedy and the talent is incredible and they are all professional adult actors, so people don’t want to miss it.”
