VIDA to offer electrician program

Valley Initiative for Development and Advancement or VIDA is offering an electrician program at no charges to students.

VIDA is offering paid tuition, tools and books for the Commercial Electrician Program that starts on Jan. 11, 2021.

Classes will be offered in McAllen and Brownsville and despite the pandemic, officials said it’s a great time to start a new year or to upskill.

VIDA’s mission is to formulate new institutional relationships in the Rio Grande Valley that simultaneously address employers’ needs for skilled workers and prepare the area’s unemployed and underemployed residents with high-skill, high-wage jobs identified in the region.

Officials said anyone with construction or electrician experience will be closer to gaining their electrician license.

For interested individuals with no experience, the program will get you on a career path to achieve the Journeyman License. Officials said with the large projects such as the LNG’s and with the steel mill coming to the Port of Brownsville, coupled with the continued growth in the Rio Grande Valley, electricians will continue to be in high demand.

VIDA pays for tuition, books, tools and childcare. Graduates are placed in a job immediately after graduation.
