City, BISD partner to reach goal of 70% census completion

The City of Brownsville and the Brownsville Independent School District have teamed up to promote the importance of completing the 2020 census to BISD employees and families by the Sept. 30 deadline.

According to a press release sent by the city, participants are entered into a raffle to win one of the three prizes totaling $2,000. The deadline to participate is Sep. 25 and participants must screenshot or print the confirmation that they have completed the census and present the proof to their principal department or director.

The raffle to pick the winners will be held Monday, Sep. 28. The first place prize is a Dell Inspiron 14-inch touch screen laptop, second place is a Dell Inspiron 23.8-inch touch screen desktop computer; and the third place is an Apple iPad with an Apple keyboard.

“The collaboration is one of several ways the City of Brownsville and BISD are doing teir part to promote the importance of completing the 2020 Census. If all BISD employees complete the Census, this would bring Brownsville closer to the 70 percent goal,” the press release reads.

The City of Brownsville has also been pairing food drives and Census outreach to reach parts of the community with a lower Census completion rate.

If a household has already completed the Census but they do not have a confirmation, it can be filled out again. Those who do it again will not be counted twice as the Census will delete the duplicates.

“The Census provides critical data that lawmakers, business owners, teachers, and many others use to provide daily services, products, and support for you and your community,” the press release reads.

“Every year, billions of dollars in federal funding go to hospitals, fire departments, schools, roads, and other resources based on Census data.”
