Brownsville Public Utilities Board in partnership with the Brownsville Museum of Fine Art invite local artists from the Rio Grande Valley and Matamoros to submit art pieces for the upcoming Brownsville Resaca’s exhibit.
Participating artists will have the opportunity to express their interpretation of the Resacas and Wildlife through two and three-dimensional artworks to raise awareness on the environmental and ecological impact to the resacas and promote how it highlights the City of Brownsville’s natural beauty.
“Resacas are a unique ecosystem and play a vital role in our community. They provide multiple benefits to our community as well as native plants and wildlife,” BPUB Senior Communications and Public Relations Coordinator Cleiri Quezada said.
“Resacas play an important role during floods and drought. Resacas provide water storage capacity during times of heavy rain; resaca levels can be lowered to make room for stormwater runoff. During drought, they can provide an important alternate resource for water.”
The requirements to participate are to submit one artwork image that has not been previously exhibited at the BMFA, the name of the Resaca or location of inspiration for the artwork, title, medium, size and price if the art piece is going for sale.
“BPUB is always looking to get involved in events that reflect the kind of work that we do,” Quezada said.
“ Showcasing our resacas like this is an effective way to make people aware of the work that we’re doing to restore them, and it continues teaching the community and visitors why resacas are not only beautiful but one of the most important natural resources for Brownsville.”
Registration deadline is Saturday Oct. 3 via email to [email protected] and [email protected]. Art pieces selected will exhibit at the BMFA from October 20 through November 28.
