HARLINGEN — State health officials announced 1,251 new COVID-19 cases Sunday, bringing the total number of Texans infected with the coronavirus to 37,860.
Of those, 1,049 persons have died, the Department of State Health Services announced.
The chart for the state indicates the COVID-19 infection rate is still trending slightly upward, led by Harris County (7,594 confirmed cases), Dallas County (5,367), Tarrant County (3,127), Travis County (2,071 and Bexar County (1,835).
Texas health officials have tested 489,294 suspected COVID-19 cases with the 37,860 cases confirmed. Just over 20,000 patients have recovered.
The majority of state cases are found in Texans aged 40 to 49, followed closely by the 50 to 59 group and then the 30 to 39 age group.
Patients who have succumbed to COVID-19 are by far highest in the over-80 age group. The next highest is the 65 to 69 age group.
In Cameron County, 18 new cases were reported Saturday, the highest one-day total since nearly 40 cases were reported April 9.
The county now has 512 confirmed cases, ranking it 15th among the state’s counties. Hidalgo County ranks 18th with 389 cases.
