RAYMONDVILLE — A man and woman in their 50s have become Willacy County’s 11th and 12th confirmed cases of the coronavirus.
Now, the state health department, which isolates infected patients, is expected to launch an investigation to determine whether they might have infected others.
Both of the county’s new cases are linked to previous cases, Frank Torres, the county’s emergency management coordinator, said Friday.
“ One of the new cases is community acquired and the other contact is a positive case,” he said.
So far, four residents have recovered from infections while a Willacy County man in his 60s became the Rio Grande Valley’s first death linked to the virus.
On Monday, health officials confirmed the county’s ninth and 10th virus cases — a female in her teens and a man in his 60s.
Last week, the county’s number of confirmed cases began mounting.
On April 14, a woman in her 20s became the county’s first confirmed case in 10 days.
Later that week, officials confirmed three more cases in this sparsely populated farming area with about 22,000 residents.
Torres is urging residents to continue complying with social distancing guidelines and shelter-in-place orders.
