The Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District decided Thursday that all school-sponsored out of state travel will be canceled for the rest of the school year. Additionally, it has suspended travel outside of the Rio Grande Valley until further notice.
The district says the changes were made in an abundance of caution for the novel coronavirus.
SAN BENITO
According to San Benito CISD superintendent of schools Dr. Nate Carman, all campuses will receive a deep cleaning during Spring Break.
Carman said school trips are being limited, but not all have been cancelled.
“We have been cleaning high touch areas more frequently for the past couple weeks with an appropriate sanitizer,” Carman stated in an email on Thursday. “We will continue to monitor next week and make decisions based on available information.”
POINT ISABEL
Point Isabel ISD is canceling all school-sponsored out of state travel for the remainder of the school year.
Additionally, the district is suspending school-sponsored travel outside of the Rio Grande Valley until further notice.
“We want to thank our Point Isabel ISD community for your support and understanding as we work together to keep our PIISD families safe,” the announcement states. “PIISD is closely monitoring reports and information shared by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention about COVID 19.”
BROWNSVILLE
The Brownsville Independent School District announced that all student travel outside the Valley has also canceled until further notice.
The district also announced Spring Break will not be extended an extra week. Classes will resume as scheduled on March 23.
As of today, there have been no confirmed cases of Coronavirus in Cameron County nor in the surrounding counties.
