The Hidalgo County Republican Party has opened applications for those seeking to become the party’s candidate for the 93rd District Court in the November election.
The application period will run through Aug. 20, according to a Hidalgo County GOP news release.
The party’s precinct chairs will then have until Aug. 28 to nominate a candidate whose name will appear on the November ballot against Democratic candidate Fernando Mancias, who Hidalgo County Democratic Party precinct chairs nominated June 29.
Whoever is elected in November will carry out the remainder of ex-District Judge Rodolfo “Rudy” Delgado’s term, which comes to an end in 2020. The seat became vacant upon his April resignation amid federal bribery charges.
Gov. Greg Abbott recently appointed Republican Jaime Tijerina to fill the seat through Dec. 31, when the elected judge will assume office for the term’s remaining two years.
“For too long, our county has been ruled and controlled by one message, one party,” Hidalgo County GOP Chair Adrienne Peña-Garza said in the news release.
She would not answer questions about the party’s nomination process, nor whether anyone had expressed interest in seeking the candidacy.
