EDINBURG — Today is the last day to protest 2018 property valuations across the state.
Property owners who don’t agree with the appraised value of their property and would like the opportunity to discuss it further with an appraiser must complete a protest form and submit it to the Hidalgo County Appraisal District before the end of the day, said Jorge Gonzalez, assistant chief appraiser for the Hidalgo County Appraisal District.
The May 15 deadline comes about two weeks earlier than last year’s due to the Texas legislature changing the law during the last session, Gonzalez said.
Residents can submit a protest in person at 4405 S. Professional Drive in Edinburg by mail, fax or online at www.hidalgoad.org.
Afterward, the appraisal district will send protestors a form with dates for two hearings: a formal and informal one.
They are typically set about three weeks apart from each other, Gonzalez said. During the informal hearing, property owners will meet with an appraiser, and together they will try to reach an agreement.
If an agreement is not reached, a formal hearing before the appraisal board will take place.
Hearings are expected to end in early July, with the district certifying values for all taxing entities before July 25.
