Monitor seeks nominations for local ‘Women We Love’

To coincide with Women’s History Month, The Monitor last March launched an inaugural celebration of women from our community whom we admire. We published the series in our entertainment magazine, Festiva, and called it, “Women We Love.”

This year — beginning March 5 — we will feature a new group of women on the front page of the newspaper, and we’ll need your help.

We are accepting nominations for women our readers believe should be on the 2018 list. Nominations must be emailed to [email protected] by 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 23. Detail in your nomination the person’s name, hometown and why you think they should make the list. Your nominee should also reside in Hidalgo or Starr counties.

We are looking for women who have made an impact on the community and have excelled in their field. These women should have a strong strength of character whose perseverance is worthy of note.

The Monitor editors will choose the women who make the final list.

Last year’s list included:

>> Zenett Bernal (a fire artist);

>> District Judge Renee Rodriguez-Betancourt;

>> Blanca Cardenas (a vice president with the McAllen Chamber of Commerce);

>> Michelle Crane (serves on the boards for the Make-a-Wish Foundation and the McAllen Performing Arts Center);

>> University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vice President of Governmental and Community Relations Veronica Gonzales;

>> UTRGV Assistant Vice President of Public Art Dahlia Garcia Guerra;
