EDINBURG — The municipal court here is giving those with outstanding citations an opportunity to pay without being arrested.
From Feb.12 to March 2, the court will hold a warrant amnesty program for those with Class C misdemeanor warrants out of Edinburg. In addition to waiving active warrants during the two-week period, the city will dismiss the failure to appear charge for those who come to court and make arrangements to pay their citations in full or in installments.
The court has 42,748 outstanding warrants, some of which date back to 2000, totaling approximately $10.6 million, according to Raul Ramos, Edinburg Municipal Court chief marshal.
Class C misdemeanors are commonly traffic citations, but also offenses such as public intoxication, disorderly conduct and petty theft under $50.
A warrant is issued after someone fails to either pay the citation or show up to court by a set deadline to contest the charge.
After March 2, the court will execute any outstanding warrants — thus putting those who fail to take advantage of the amnesty program at risk of arrest.
The Edinburg Municipal Court, located at 1702 S. Closner Blvd., is open Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
