Tonight is the night where two Democrats will prevail in Rio Grande Valley congressional races that have been the focus of local and national attention.
In District 15, progressive Michelle Vallejo will face off against moderate Ruben Ramirez.
The winner will be pitted against Republican Monica De La Cruz in November.
Texas Republicans redistricted District 15 making it a contender to flip red in the traditionally blue region.
In District 28, longtime conservative Democrat Henry Cuellar will face off against progressive challenger Jessica Cisneros.
This runoff has been marked by an FBI raid on Cuellar’s home. The congressman has not been charged with a crime and has cooperated with federal authorities. His attorney told the Texas Tribune that he is not the target of the investigation.
More recently, this runoff has brought heightened attention to Cuellar’s track record of opposing abortion rights following the leak of a Supreme Court draft opinion that would overturn Roe v. Wade. Cisneros is a strong proponent of abortion rights.
District 28 includes Starr and Webb counties, along with seven other counties, or portions of those counties, that stretch all the way to San Antonio.
District 15 includes Hidalgo County, along with six other counties, or portions of those counties, that run north to northeast of San Antonio and Bexar County.
In the Republican runoff for District 28, Sandra Whitten faces Casey Garcia for a place on the November ballot.
