Mission man accused of killing brother on Christmas

Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Investigators arrested and charged a Mission man in the Christmas Day murder of his brother.

According to a news release, deputies responded to a Mission hospital on Sunday afternoon regarding a man who was dead on arrival. The victim reportedly had injuries consistent with assault.

“Through further investigation, Sheriff’s Investigators located the crime scene in the 8200 block of Expressway 83,” the release stated. “Investigators identified the suspect as Luis Matilde Enrique Cruz, 25 years of age, from Mission. Investigators arrested and charged Luis Cruz with Aggravated Assault Causes Serious Bodily Injury.”

The release goes on to say that investigators received preliminary autopsy results Wednesday, and upgraded Cruz’s charges to murder as a result.

In a tweet shared Wednesday evening, Hidalgo County Sheriff Eddie Guerra identified the murder suspect as the victim’s brother, and added that he’d admitted to assaulting his brother in a statement shared with HCSO.

“At 2:43pm Christmas Day, Deputies responded to Mission Hospital in reference to an adult male that arrived deceased,” Guerra’s tweet read. “Preliminary autopsy results showed the cause as a Homicide. Murder charges will be filed on the victim’s brother who provided a statement he assaulted his brother.”
