A 35-year-old Alton man is in custody after authorities said he assaulted a woman and stole her truck in rural McAllen before leading multiple law enforcement agencies in a chase that ended near Mission.

The Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release that deputies responded to a call for an aggravated robbery in the 6900 block of Campbell Drive at approximately 6:45 p.m. Wednesday.

A woman told deputies that a man walked up to her silver 2007 Chevy Silverado while she was stopped, assaulted her and then stole her truck, according to a news release.

A unit responding to the call saw the stolen vehicle leaving Campbell Drive and the suspect, who authorities identified as Ramon Cortez. Cortez allegedly reversed the vehicle into the responding deputy and a pursuit ensued.

The sheriff’s office said surrounding agencies, including Mission police and the Texas Department of Public Safety assisted with the pursuit, which ended after authorities successfully spiked the truck’s tires south of Mile 2 North on Conway.

Cortez was charged with aggravated robbery, aggravated assault against a public servant and evading arrest or detention with a vehicle.

As of Thursday morning, a bond had not been set.
