Brownsville fire investigators have been unable to determine the cause of a fire that destroyed eight units at a Brownsville apartment complex.

The fire happened April 24 at the Lakeside Apartments, 600 Lakeside Blvd.

Brownsville Fire Marshal Daniel Villarreal said there was too much damage to the apartments and that authorities were unable to determine what caused the fire to break out.

Although the investigation is closed it can be reopened when new information is found, Villarreal said. “Right now, it has been determined as undetermined.”

Investigators had been looking at the possibility that a barbecue or electrical problem had started the fire. “We really can’t prove either or,” Villarreal said.

It’s believed the fire started somewhere between the ceiling area of the first floor and the second floor.

“Somewhere in there it started but what exactly caused it I couldn’t tell you because there was too much damage for us to pinpoint exactly” what caused it, Villarreal said.

Authorities had been told a tenant on the second floor of the apartment complex had been barbecuing.

On Monday yellow caution tape and fencing remained in front of the damaged apartments to prevent anyone from gaining entrance and getting injured.

At least nine fire engines had been sent to location to extinguish the fire. The fire destroyed the units located in the back of the complex.

According to Apartment Finder, the complex was built in 1965 and has two stories with 50 units.
