A 29-year-old Edcouch man accused of gunning down his common-law wife and mother-in law on New Year’s Eve is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday afternoon on an indictment charging him with capital murder of multiple persons.
The Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office arrested Agustin Adan Castellano at the scene of the shooting in the 13000 block of Kenny Lane near Donna on Dec. 31.
Investigators say Castellano first shot his common-law wife, 30-year-old Olga Guadalupe Guevera, and then shot his mother-in law, 58-year-old María de la Luz Reyes Martinez, when she went to check on her daughter after hearing gunshots.
A witness told deputies that Castellano was armed with a rifle when he chased Guevera inside of a residence, according to an affidavit for his arrest.
That witness fled after hearing three gunshots, authorities say.
“Olga’s mother, María de la Luz Reyes Martinez, went to Olga’s residence to check on her, at which point (the witness) heard several more gunshots,” the affidavit says.
Another witness also went to the residence after hearing gunshots, investigators say in the charging document.
“He saw that María was dead and saw Agustin with a rifle. He began fighting with Agustin and managed to take the rifle away,” the affidavit stated.
That document doesn’t provide an alleged motive behind the fatal shooting.
Castellano initially received no bond on the charge.
Since then, a $1 million bond has been set, court records show.
He remains jailed.
