Rotary Club of Brownsville Sunrise to host yearly flag project

The Brownsville Sunrise Rotary will host its annual Flag Project which will kick off on Veteran’s Day where members can rent one of the more than 50 flags available and have them placed at their house for the day.

The flag project runs throughout the whole year and those who wish to participate will have a flag placed on their home early in the morning on June 14, July 4, Sep. 11 and Nov. 11. and have it removed at the end of the day. The fee to rent the flag is $50 for a whole year and funds go to the several projects the rotary club participates in to help the community.

“We are always trying to help the community and their needs. Not only here in our community but it can also be internationally, we’ve been able to help Matamoros with their projects; there was a project where we provided water in the city in a colonia where they needed it,” Mari Montelongo, of the Brownsville Sunrise Rotary said.

“So, we always try to help, our main focus is to provide help to the community in any way that we are able to and that’s why we raise money.”

Montelongo said one of the most important projects for the club is the school supplies where club members put together backpacks with supplies for at risk elementary school children each year.

“These children have a higher probability of dropping out if not given a helping hand to succeed,” the official website reads. “Backpacks were provided to third, fourth and fifth graders for the return to school classes after summer break.”

The club is also involved in the World Project Fair, which began in March of 2019 as a need from the Rotary Club of Brownsville Sunrise to partner with other clubs in their international projects.

“This idea started as a Bi-District Project Fair with the help of our District 5930 of South Texas and District 4130 from Northern Mexico,” the website reads.

“As this Project Fair started to become a reality, more Districts were added to the list of participants. At this point we change the name to Multi-District Project Fair.”

The project fair helps several causes such as fighting diseases, growing local economies, promoting peace, providing clean water, sanitation & hygiene, saving mothers and children, supporting education and supporting the environment.

“We take these funds to all the non-profit organizations that are in need, if they need a refrigerator, something that they need to provide services to the community we help them,” Montelongo said.
