NWS: Watch for pelicans

With the arrival of cold fronts in the Rio Grande Valley, forecasters with the National Weather Service are urging motorists to watch for pelicans between Brownsville and Port Isabel.

In recent years, cold fronts have coincided with strong winds that have contributed to fatalities of pelicans that have been struck by motorists driving Highway 48, along the Bahia Grande between the two communities.

“ Remember to watch for pelicans this morning through tonight, especially across bridges along Highway 48 near Bahia Grande and Highway 100,” NWS Brownsville stated on on Twitter Wednesday morning.

According to the National Weather Service, the forecast for that area promises some cool weather and winds:

>> Thursday: Sunny, with a high near 74. Breezy, with a northwest wind 16 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 28 mph. >> Thursday night: Mostly clear, with a low around 62. Breezy, with a north wind 16 to 18 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph.

>> Friday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 68. Breezy, with a north northwest wind 15 to 18 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph.

>> Friday night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 62. North wind 6 to 13 mph.

>> Saturday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 74. North northeast wind 7 to 10 mph.

>> Saturday night: Mostly clear, with a low around 68. East northeast wind 5 to 9 mph becoming light east after midnight.

>> Sunday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 77. Breezy, with a north wind 7 to 12 mph increasing to 13 to 18 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 25 mph.

>> Sunday night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 65. Breezy, with a north northeast wind 16 to 18 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph.
