The Board of Directors of Sombrero Festival announced Thursday night that it voted to cancel next year’s event.
In a Facebook post, the group said it did not make this decision lightly.
“We have monitored trends over the last several months, have considered where we are today, and what the outlook is going into the 4th quarter of 2020, and for the 1st quarter of 2021. All indications are that the festival could not be held in the same way it was in 2020 and still be a safe event from a virus spread perspective.”
The annual event is held in Washington Park in conjunction with Charro Days.
“We are actively looking at alternative small scale opportunities should conditions allow for a small scale in-person event, as well as virtual online events.”
Most of those commenting on Facebook agreed with the decision.
“Thank you for doing right by the community and not letting the almighty dollar dictate your decision,” said Celeste Montemayor-Arias.
“I’m so sad. This is my favorite time of year. I look forward to it,” said Jennifer Nuñez Ramírez.
Anna Silva suggested a drive-by Sombrero Festival.
“It’s sad to see the best event cancelled, but understandable. Maybe you can do a drive by festival I have seen San Antonio do that to their fiesta event,” Silva said on Facebook.
“Thank you all for understanding and your continued love and support for the annual Sombrero Festival!”
