Commissioner says Harlingen fire chief faces termination

HARLINGEN — After about six years on the job, Fire Chief Roy Rubio is facing termination, City Commissioner Frank Puente said Friday.

Puente said Rubio was placed on administrative leave on Thursday and faces termination when he returns to work on Tuesday.

Puente said Rubio has filed two grievances against City Manager Dan Serna regarding the Valley International Airport fire department.

Rubio did not respond to a message requesting comment.

At City Hall, Serna declined comment.

“I don’t comment on personnel matters,” he said.

Puente said there is a possibility that Rubio might take legal action against the city.

“More than likely there’s going to be a lawsuit filed against the city,” Puente said.

Rubio, who was hired in 2014 at a salary of $97,500, is now earning $128,177.

Rubio has served as chief of the McAllen and Weslaco fire departments.
