In terms of technology and innovation specific to rehabilitation of patients who have experienced stroke, the choices are vast and constantly evolving. Recent collaboration between bioengineers, researchers, and neurorehabilitation experts has produced effective pieces of rehabilitation technology, such as body-weight support systems, functional electrical stimulation, virtual reality devices, and robotics, all of which are effective in the treatment of stroke patients, and all are utilized within the DHR Health System.

When stroke patients and their families are looking for this level of technology and facilities that have invested in it, the following variables should be considered: Is the equipment safe for the patient? Are the parameters modifiable? Is the equipment engaging for the patient? What training is required for the therapist? Is the equipment evidence-based? Does the equipment promote good body alignment during the task?  Does the device have measurable parameters and outcomes, and does the device promote high repetitions? All of these variables facilitate principles of neuroplasticity, which is the brain’s ability to form and rewire neural connections. This is essential for neurorehabilitation.

One of DHR Health’s recent upgrades in technology, possessing all of these variables, is the EKSO NR by EKSO Bionics. The EKSO NR is a robotic exoskeleton that has proven to be effective in retraining stroke patients to walk again and is utilized at some of the most renowned rehabilitation centers in the country. This wearable device augments strength, to help patients stand and relearn to walk while gaining confidence and freedom.  The smart software of the device allows clinicians to adjust settings based on a patient’s weaknesses and to tailor the settings to each individual rehab session.  The goal with the EKSO NR is to progress patients during their rehabilitation so they can regain as much function as possible in order to walk out of the device.

In addition to being cleared by the FDA for use with stroke patients, the EKSO NR is also cleared by the FDA for use with acquired brain injury and spinal cord injury (up to C7) and with patients with multiple sclerosis.  DHR Health is the only facility south of San Antonio and Houston that possesses such technology and is able to offer it across the continuum of care, from in-patient rehab to outpatient services at the Neuro Therapy Institute.
