The city’s multimodal transportation department will be hosting an event that will celebrate cycling, walking and community health and wellness.

CycloBia: Cycling the Streets Art in Motion will kick off at 6 p.m. Friday at Linear Park, located at E. 6th Street and E Ringgold Street.

“CycloBia is more than just cycling; it’s about creating health and wellness awareness, enjoying our City and creating a sense of community,” city commissioner Rose Gowen said in the release. “I want to encourage families, friends, and neighbors to come out and experience this fun and healthy event together.”

The event, which is open to all ages, will feature a Fun Walk-Run track, a cycling/walking track, live entertainment and prizes, according to a news release from the city.

The route will take participants from Linear Park to Market Square and along a scenic tour of the nine vibrant murals throughout downtown Brownsville.

“The Walk-Run is a wonderful way to get the whole family involved,” city commissioner Linda C. Macias said. “I invite everyone to join us as we explore the beautiful murals and celebrate the vibrant culture of downtown Brownsville.”

The family friendly one-mile Fun Walk-Run will kick off the event from 6 to 6:30 p.m. at Linear Park, which will serve at the warm-up for the main event.

Next, CycloBia’s cycling/walking portion will start at 7 p.m. at Linear Park, where participants are asked to take selfies with the downtown murals and post them on their Facebook page with the hashtag “#CyclobiaBTX,” the release states.

Those who visit all nine murals will verify their visits at the park’s registration table with the multimodal department staff, where they will receive a Cyclobia Drawing Ticket. That ticket will enter participants into a drawing for prizes, which include mountain bicycles among other items. Winners must be present to win since the drawing is scheduled for 8 p.m. at Linear Park.

The city said in the release that those who want to participate but do not have a bicycle can rent one from the multimodal transportation department, which will offer the rents at 6 p.m.

In addition to the festivities, there will also be live entertainment performances from the Revival of the Cultural Arts Center at Market Square.

Lastly, the city said in the release that those who will be driving downtown during the event should note that the streets around the route will be closed at 5:45 p.m. to allow for the preparation of the event.

“Commuters should drive with caution and be prepared to take alternate routes, around the downtown area, to get to their destination,” the release stated.
