The Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office has identified the man accused of running from deputies in a vehicle pursuit Wednesday that ended with a deputy shooting one of the men in the leg.

The vehicle’s driver is 31-year-old Weslaco resident Ubaldo Garcia, who was released from the hospital Thursday and booked into the Hidalgo County Adult Detention Center on charges of aggravated assault on a peace officer, assault on a peace officer, evading arrest and resisting arrest.

Authorities also identified another suspect in the case, Felipe Rojas, 30, of San Juan, who is charged with manufacture and delivery of a controlled substance.

Following the chase and shooting, investigators, who were conducting a narcotics investigation, obtained a search warrant for a location in the 1100 block of Owassa Road in rural Edinburg. During the search, authorities found packaged synthetic marijuana intended for distribution and U.S. currency, according to the release. He was arrested at the scene.

“Both the narcotics and the currency were seized as evidence,” the release stated.

The suspect who was shot during the chase has not been identified yet and remains hospitalized.

The chase on Wednesday began at around 9:08 a.m. when a deputy, who the sheriff’s office has not identified, was in the process of initiating a traffic stop in the area of Tower and Owassa roads as part of a narcotics investigation.

The suspect vehicle fled at a high rate of speed, almost hitting deputies resulting in the pursuit that ended when Garcia, the driver, lost control and crashed into a ditch west of FM 88 on Mile 13 Road in rural Weslaco, according to a news release.

The sheriff’s office said a deputy approached the vehicle and heard “what sounded like gunshots,” prompting the deputy to fire his weapon, hitting Garcia in the leg, according to the release.

Garcia remains held in the Hidalgo County Adult Detention Center on a total of $100,000 in bonds while Rojas bailed out on a $40,000 bond Friday.
