COMBES — A complaint from a Combes parent in connection to the arrest of a former athletic coordinator of the Jubilee Brownsville campus was made a week before the suspect was arrested, police said in an Oct. 20 press release.
Deira Allan Glover, 32, of Harlingen, was arrested Oct. 20 by investigators with the Cameron County District Attorney’s Office Special Investigations Unit and the Combes Police Department, authorities said.
According to the Combes Police Department, a parent of an 11-year-old girl filed a complaint on Oct. 13 about inappropriate text messages in the girl’s cell phone.
According to the police press release, the cell phone was examined by police, who said they found hundreds of sexually explicit Instagram messages between the girl and a username identified as “mikep896”.
The press release also stated several of the messages indicated the victim and “mikep896” had previously engaged in sexual activity.
An investigation revealed the identity of “mikep896’ as Glover, according to the police press release.
“As the investigation continued, it was also learned that Glover was made aware by the victim of her age and that she is a current student at Harlingen. According to the victim, the improper relationship began in early September and continued through October 2020, and that Glover initially contacted her through Instagram. The victim also confirmed sexual contact between herself and Glover,” the police press release stated.
Glover is charged with aggravated sexual assault of a child, improper relationship between educator and student, online solicitation of a minor and enticing a child with intent to commit a felony, according to the press release.
Cameron County District Attorney Luis V. Saenz said, “It is unfortunate that modern technology is a common tool for predators to take advantage of our children. Parents should stay engaged with their children, keep a watchful eye on online presence and app usage, and never be afraid to ask what they are doing and with whom they are communicating.”
According to Combes police, the investigation continues due to the nature of the charges and the number of children Glover had access to.
Police said Glover has refused to cooperate with investigators.
In a prepared statement, Jubilee officials said Glover had been terminated and was prohibited from being on any Jubilee Academies properties.
“Although we have no reason to believe at this time the incident in question is associated with the campus or any students or staff, Jubilee is cooperating fully with the investigation and taking all appropriate actions in accordance with the law and our organizational policy,” Jubilee stated.
Police said anyone with information regarding inappropriate activities or made contact with the Instagram user “mikep896” is asked to contact the Combes Police Department at 956-425-7131.
