Hidalgo County reported two more cases of monkeypox on Monday.

The Hidalgo County Health and Human Services department confirmed a second and third case of the virus in a news release Monday.

The second case was confirmed over the weekend and determined to be travel-related, while the third was confirmed Monday. Investigators have few details about the third case, the county said.

Health officials have begun contact tracing to determine who might have been exposed to each of the patients, who are not being identified, the news release said.

The two cases follow the confirmation of the country’s first case of monkeypox announced last Monday, Aug. 22. That case was suspected to be travel related.

The county said there is no indication that these two cases are related to the first case.

Both of the new patients have been asked to isolate to mitigate any chance of spreading the virus.

The county added it continues to work with Cameron County and Westbrook clinics to identify patients who are at the highest risk to contract the virus in an effort to vaccinate them.
