Edinburg man threatened to kill children at park, affidavit says

Lee Hector Rios

An Edinburg man police arrested a little more than a week ago is accused of yelling and threatening to kill any child in his way, according to an affidavit for his arrest.

Officers first arrested 30-year-old Lee Hector Rios on June 5 on two counts of terroristic threat and one count of evading arrest, but he spent about a week in the hospital for an undisclosed medical reason before being booked on Monday into the Hidalgo County Adult Detention Center.

The incident unfolded at about 6:26 p.m. that day at the Edinburg Municipal Park located at 714 S. Raul Longoria Road after multiple people called police about a man threatening people with a gun.

The affidavit said four people called police, and one witness told officers about Rios’ threat to shoot children.

Police say Rios ran after officers caught up with him on a walking trail, but was detained after a brief chase, according to a news release.

“Officer Flores will testify that the male was identified as Lee Hector Rios who said he was jogging even though he did not have any shoes on,” the affidavit states.

In a previous news release, police said officers did not locate a gun.

Rios remains jailed Tuesday on a total of $25,000 in bonds, jail records indicate.
