The Rio Grande Valley saw 64 additional deaths due to COVID-19 and 814 new cases on Tuesday.
Hidalgo County made up a majority of those numbers, confirming 49 additional deaths due to the coronavirus, according to a county news release. Officials also said the deaths broke the county’s single-day record.
There were another 339 cases of COVID-19 confirmed in the county Tuesday.
The youngest among the deaths include two men from Alamo and Alton in their 50s.
The county’s death toll is now up to 367, and the total cases confirmed in the county amount to 13,126.
Additionally, 207 individuals were released from isolation on Tuesday, leaving 7,286 active cases there.
There are currently 1,080 people in local hospitals fighting the coronavirus, with 257 being cared for in intensive care units.
According to the county’s COVID-19 dashboard, there are 275 hospital beds left in the area.
McAllen is currently leading the county with the most COVID-19 cases, making up for 14.2%, according to the county dashboard. Though, Edinburg has the highest percentage of its population infected, reporting 2.3% of its residents to have contracted the disease.
So far, the county has distributed 77,737 COVID-19 tests, of which 16.89% have returned positive.
Another 15 people died in Cameron County due to the virus, along with 307 new cases of the disease being reported there, officials announced in a news release Tuesday.
The youngest among the deaths was a 48-year-old woman from Harlingen.
The county’s death toll is now at 126, with a total of 6,520 cases.
On Tuesday, 97 individuals were reported to have recovered from the disease, leaving 3,464 active cases.
Starr County on Monday broke its single-day record of 145 new confirmed cases of COVID-19, according to county Health Authority Dr. Jose Vasquez.
The total number of cases seen there now is 1,573.
So far, according to Vasquez, 477 have recovered from the coronavirus, leaving 1,087 active cases in the county.
There were no new reported deaths there, leaving the death toll at nine. There are still 32 deaths pending state confirmation.
Additionally, Willacy County confirmed 23 new cases of the disease on Tuesday, raising the case count there to 497.
The youngest among the new cases include three boys under 10 years old, and four teenagers.
