State Rep. Eddie Lucio III today penned a letter to Gov. Greg Abbott requesting that the Texas Education Agency transition to virtual instruction for the upcoming school year.
TEA Commissioner Mike Morath earlier this week said school districts must reopen campuses for in person instruction next month in order to continue to receive state funding.
Lucio states while he knows the issue is a complex one, he is requesting both Abbott and Morath to reconsider the decision to “prevent exposing our students, teachers, and staff to unnecessary risks associated with this pandemic. The current proposal for the school year has given school districts no choice and is forcing them to unnecessarily expose their students, teachers, and staff to retain state funding.”
On Wednesday, Texas reported 9,979 new cases of coronavirus. Statewide, the cases total 220,564 with 2,813 deaths, according to Texas Health and Human Services.
Lucio said he will also launch a Facebook group, Texans for Virtual Instruction, that can serve as centralized platform for citizens to express their concerns about the return to in-person instruction.
