BREAKING: Bailiff facing cocaine conspiracy charges

McALLEN — The bailiff arrested by federal agents Friday stood before a U.S. Magistrate on charges he played a role in a conspiracy to move more than 5 kilos of cocaine.

Oscar De La Cruz, a Hidalgo County Court at Law bailiff, stood before U.S. Magistrate Judge J. Scott Hacker as the judge read out a complaint alleging De La Cruz provided false documents to at least one confidential source to facilitate the movement of cocaine.

De La Cruz was arrested Friday afternoon by federal agents.

It appears that De La Cruz, who was accompanied by Edinburg-based attorney Santos Maldonado for his initial appearance in federal court, might hire a different attorney based on discussion during the Monday hearing.

Judge Hacker, who remanded the bailiff into temporary custody, set De La Cruz’s detention hearing for Tuesday afternoon where he would learn whether or not he would be granted a bond.
