Rotary club to host annual Shrimp Fest

HARLINGEN — Hungry for some shrimp?

The 24th Annual Shrimp Fest and Auction is slated for Friday, Feb. 23.

The large annual fundraiser works to raise funds for the three Rotary Clubs located in Harlingen.

Eddie Bartnesky, president of the Rotary Shrimp Fest of South Texas Inc., said the event is its own entity separate from any one Rotary club.

The event began more than 20 years ago with the sole purpose to support local Rotary Clubs.

“It has really developed over time,” Bartnesky said.

Money collected is divided and distributed among the three clubs.

“The proceeds are divided and given back into the community in scholarships and donations,” Bartnesky said.

Last year, more than $50,000 was collected and given to the clubs to use for its charitable community projects and scholarships.

“Expenses are mainly minimal and then the rest is divided up among the clubs,” Bartnesky said.

More than 1,000 residents attend the popular event every year.

Last year, 1,600 tickets were sold.

More than half of those who bought tickets took their plates to go with the remainder dining in at the Casa de Amistad, where the event is held.

“We fill the place up,” Bartnesky said. “It’s jam packed. I’m sure we’ll fill it up again this year.”

In addition to the shrimp plates, ticket holders will have a chance to win various door prizes and participate in the auctions.

Some of the big ticket items include golf carts, a four wheeler and a his and her bicycle set.

Bartnesky said more than 60 items have been donated for the auction.

“Everybody kind of looks forward to Shrimp Fest every year,” Bartnesky said.
