Deadline today to register: Application for March elections must be in today

BROWNSVILLE — Today is the last day to register to vote if for those who plan to vote in the March 6 primary election.

Although Cameron County is observing today as President’s Day and thus county employees have the day off, the Cameron County Office of Voter Registration and Election will be open for those Cameron County residents who still need to register to vote.

Cameron County Elections Administrator Remi Garza said election offices will be open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. today to accommodate anyone wanting to register to vote before the deadline.

The office is located at 1050 E. Madison St.

Garza said his office has seen a significant rise in the number of voter applications. The office has processed close to 200 applications and has another 100 on which it is working, he said Friday.

“Each day we receive about 20 additional applications. We recently had a registration drive in the local high schools and colleges. Community groups are also having registration drives and have been signing up Volunteer Deputy Registrars,” Garza said.

As of Friday, the county had 199,714 eligible voters. The county’s goal is to exceed 200,000 before today’s deadline.

Garza hopes those people who have yet to register take advantage of today’s opportunity, saying, “Whether it is one or 100, we will be ready.”

Garza added there are three ways people can submit an application to the elections office, by mail or common carrier, hand-delivered to the office or volunteer deputy registrar, or as a last resort faxed in, but his office must receive the application by mail within four days of being faxed in.
