Music teachers perform for scholarship fund

HARLINGEN — Want to help a music student attend college?

How about listening to the Harlingen school district’s music instructors show their stuff?

Well, guess what? You can do both tomorrow night at the Bob Irby Memorial Scholarship and Faculty Concert.

“It’s a talent show for music teachers in the Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District,” said Ronnie Rios, director of music.

“It’s designed to showcase the talent of our teachers for the community and students,” Rios said. “We’re accepting donations at the door for scholarships.”

The event at the Harlingen Performing Arts Center on Wilson Road is named after Bob Irby, who served the district as a music teacher from 1957 to 1986. The show will present a broad range of talent from different teachers at the elementary, middle school and high school levels.

“We’ll have vocal solos, piano solos,” he said. “We’ll have a jazz trio. It will end with a big band I’ll be headlining with about 20 teachers.”
