Deadline to register to vote is Monday

BROWNSVILLE — While most Cameron County employees will be taking Monday off to recognize President’s Day, the Cameron County Elections and Voter Registration Department will be hard at work and open for business on the last day of voter registration for the March primary.

President’s Day isn’t until Feb. 19, but Cameron County is recognizing it Monday.

Cameron County Elections Administrator Remi Garza said election offices will be open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday to accommodate anyone wanting to register to vote before the deadline.

“We need to let people know that our office will be open even though it is a scheduled county holiday. The deadline still applies, and any applications received after that date will be effective for the next general election in May,” Garza said.

“If they have any questions, we will be available by phone or email to respond.”

Potential voters can still mail in voter registration applications, but those must be postmarked on or before Feb. 5 to be effective.

Also, Garza is asking Cameron County voters who have changed their name, mailing address or residential address to update their registration information.

“If you moved or changed your name or address for any reason over the last two years and haven’t updated your registration information, please do so to prevent confusion when you go to vote,” Garza said.

The effort is to make sure those who are eligible to vote are “vote ready” before Election Day.
