Cook-off to benefit Humane Society

HARLINGEN — It’s a cook-off with a cause.

The Inaugural Kibble n’ Pits Cook-Off will benefit the Harlingen Humane Society which has recently been struggling financially.

The event is tomorrow and will include live music, food and games.

Currently, there are about 25 teams registered to compete in the cook-off.

One of the event organizers, Josie Alvarez, estimates that number might grow by Sunday.

The entry fee is $150, which includes the cost of the brisket, chicken and spare ribs.

An adoption booth will be available at the event, ready with animals looking for permanent homes.

The event will take place at Lon C. Hill Park and is free to attend.

The cook-off was initiated by Harlingen resident Shane Sherrill.

After reading about the possibility of the Humane Society closing, Sherrill said he had to do something.

“You hear about something closing and people not having jobs so you have to do something,” Sherrill said.

The organization’s high monthly expenses led to cutbacks on key programs including their spay and neutering services.

During the early stages of planning, Sherrill enlisted the help of two others, Alvarez and Antonio Caldwell.

The event took about six weeks to plan and since then Sherrill has joined the board of the Harlingen Humane Society.

“I didn’t want to see the staff not have jobs,” Sherrill said. “It really takes a special person to do what they do there.”

Harlingen Humane Society Board President Pat Turman-White said the support has been great.

“It’s absolutely amazing,” Turman-White said. “We have actually gotten five new board members so the support has been amazing.”

The Humane Society still needs volunteers to set up the event. Those interested should contact the society.
