A former prison guard was sentenced to prison for providing jugs of alcohol and cell phones to inmates in exchange for bribes.

Today Stephen Salinas, 23, of Edcouch, was given an 18-month sentence and three years of supervised release by U.S. District Judge Andrew S. Hanen after pleading guilty to bribery charges in January.

According to a press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office Southern District of Texas Salinas worked at the Willacy County Regional Detention Center in Raymondville and admitted to accepting $3,000 in bribes in exchange for smuggling the alcohol and phones between October 2015 and January 2016.

Acting U.S. Attorney Abe Martinez said Salinas received an extended sentence because he received more than one bribe and used his high level job to bring contraband into the prison.

Salinas will voluntarily surrender to the U.S. Marshals at a later date.
