Heat alert issued today for Valley, ranchlands

HARLINGEN — Forecasters with the National Weather Service issued a hazardous weather outlook alerting Rio Grande Valley residents to potentially dangerous heat today.

“Heat index values (the feels-like temperature) of 105 to 110 degrees will be possible across most portions of the Rio Grande Valley and the northern ranchlands this afternoon through early this evening,” forecasters in Brownsville say.

Areas within the alert zone include inland and coastal Cameron and Willacy counties, and Hidalgo, Brooks, Kenedy, Starr, Jim Hogg and Zapata counties.

Actual temperatures will range from the mid-90s in Brownsville to around 100 in McAllen.

Unusually high humidity levels will combine with those temperatures to create potentially dangerous heat conditions today.

There will be a 20 percent chance of thunderstorms today across the region.
