Triathlon time: Event set for Saturday at Victor Park

HARLINGEN — Excitement for exercise continues to increase in the Valley.

Experienced runners and bike riders are filling roads and paths alongside those who are just getting started, but not one seems to be annoyed with anyone else’s speed.

It’s all about health, and everyone seems to appreciate everyone else’s desire to get in shape, and stay there.

With the proliferation of so many 5K runs and bike rides come new ideas on how to accommodate different types of athletes.

That’s why Footworks RGV is holding the Harlingen Triathlon Festival this Saturday. Each event – swimming, running and bicycle riding – will have three distances.

Enthusiasm for the triathlon has been so strong that all 300 places have been sold out.

However, supporters can come out to support the athletes at Victor Park where they’ll head out on the individual runs and bicycle rides.

The individual swims – 200 meter, 400 meter and 800 meter – will be held at the pool.

“They’re from all over the Rio Grande Valley,” said Jun Ellorimo, owner of Footworks. “They’re coming all the way from Corpus Christi, San Antonio and Houston.”

Triathletes are also traveling from Matamoros and Reynosa for the event.

“I think it’s because it’s our first triathlon to offer three distances,” he said.

The run is being held in partnership with the City of Harlingen.
