Vixens hold off Mockingjays in IWFA playoffs

HARLINGEN — In front of a sizable home crowd the RGV Vixens would not be denied. Not by the SWTX Mockingjays and not by the rain-soaked field as the Vixens held on for a 61-32 victory Saturday evening at a slippery VictoryPark field.

With the win, the RGV Vixens move on to the second round of the IWFA Division II playoffs to face the Phoenix who defeated the Clovers 54-29 at StookeyPark.

Despite the victory it was the Mockingjays that took control of the contest early on. Ashley Velasquez gave the Mockingjays the early 6-0 lead after she scored on a 5-yard run.

However, the Vixens immediately responded with a touchdown of their own. After a short kickoff by the Mockingjays, the Vixens’ Miranda Camacho pulled down a touchdown pass to even the score at 6-6 before teammate Samantha Escandon converted the extra point for a 7-6 lead.

But the Mockingjays would not be held back and countered the Vixens TD with another TD of their own as Rosario Gonzalez scored after a short touchdown run down the right side of the field to give the Mockingjays a 13-7 lead.

After a Mockingjays fumble, the Vixens took the ball and drove down the field for a game-tying run by the Vixens Escandon with 2:10 remaining in the first.

The second quarter began in the Mockingjays favor, as the visitors’’ Leslie Medina out jumped her defender to haul in a 20-yard reception and a 19-13 lead for the Mockingjays with 11:13 left in the half.

However, it wouldn’t last as Escandon broke loose on a 31-yard TD run to give the Vixens a 20-19 lead. Escandon would find pay dirt three in the first quarter alone as the vixens would go into the half with a 34-25 lead.

In the second half, it was all defense for the Vixens as the home team allowed just one touchdown the rest of the evening.
