Miller Jordan chess teams fare well

The Miller Jordan Middle School Cougar Knights chess team is comprised of, front from left, Mariano Garcia, Karlee Padilla, Baldomero Martinez, Ociris Salinas, Manuel Martinez; back, Angelica Vasquez, Alan Ortiz, Reyna Bautista, Ilse Bautista, Omar Salinas, and Calista Guerra.

Members of the MJMS Championship Chess Team – Reyna Bautista, Omar Salinas, Karlee Padilla, Angelica Vasquez, Baldomero Martinez, Ilse Bautista, Mariano Garcia, and Alan Ortiz – recently competed at the Texas Chess Association (TCA) Region VIII Scholastic Chess Championship, placing fourth overall and qualifying the team for the SuperNationals VI Chess Tournament in Nashville, Tennessee, this upcoming May. SuperNationals occurs once every 4 years and combines the US Chess Federation’s Elementary, Junior-High, and High School (K-12) national tournaments into one event.

Members of the MJMS Junior Varsity Chess Team – Ociris Salinas, Calista Guerra, and Manuel Martinez – placed ninth overall at the Region VIII chess tournament. Salinas earned a second place individual standing, Guerra earned the 43rd place individual standing, and Martinez earned the 23rd place individual standing.

Janie Rios serves as the Afterschool Centers on Education (ACE) Program site coordinator, and Roberto Miramontes is the campus’ chess coach.
