SAN ANTONIO — Gilberto Hinojosa has been on a mission to turn Texas blue.
Over the past few weeks, he’s been doing everything he could to make that change.
Hinojosa, the Texas Democratic Party chairman, traveled more than 1,500 miles campaigning for local candidates and the big Democratic races in the heart of Texas.
A Brownsville resident and former Cameron County judge, Hinojosa has been the state party chairman since 2012. He’s the first Latino to hold the statewide position.
Since Saturday, Hinojosa has traveled to San Antonio, Dallas, Houston and Fort Worth. He was in Eagle Pass yesterday pushing the Democratic ticket.
Hinojosa ended his get-out-the-vote campaign in San Antonio with Pete Gallego’s campaign for the District 23 congressional seat.
He called it one of the most important races in Texas.
“It’s extremely incredible all the early voting we’ve seen,” Hinojosa said. “The numbers are very huge for Democrats.”
He said he has seen a lot of support for Hillary Clinton in areas that have been Republican strongholds.
He said the campaigns across the state were still very excited and fired up about the election.
“We want to turn Texas blue,” Hinojosa said. “Last week, I was at a lot of campaign headquarters across the state pushing the down ballot.”
He said there is a possibility to add five to nine Democrats to the House.
To do that, he was at plenty of phone banks across the state and oversaw many volunteers block walking and passing out campaign cards house to house.
“And that is very important because of the upcoming legislative session,” Hinojosa said.
“Eventually we will turn Texas blue and start electing people who care about families,” Hinojosa said. “We want to get people out there fighting for families.”
